What is CLT?

Cross-laminated timber is one type of mass timber. Layers of dimensional lumber are arranged perpendicular to one another and bonded into large structural panels. The cross-lamination gives the panel strength and dimensional stability in more than one direction.

Because panels are modeled and fabricated before they reach the site, openings, connections, and interfaces can be coordinated with unusual precision. That precision is valuable—but it also means important decisions must happen earlier.

Does mass timber cost more?

It depends on what is being compared. The structural package may carry different costs, while exposed finish, installation speed, labor, and schedule can shift value elsewhere. A useful comparison looks at the complete system—not panel price alone.

Is it only for modern architecture?

No. Mass timber can support contemporary, traditional, and distinctly regional work. The result depends on proportion, detailing, finish, and how the timber is combined with stone, glass, metal, and other materials.

How early should we involve a mass-timber specialist?

Ideally during feasibility or schematic design. Early involvement helps the architect and engineer establish a coherent panel grid, connection strategy, fabrication path, and site sequence before changes become expensive.

Can all of the timber remain exposed?

Some surfaces can, but fire, acoustics, moisture, services, finishes, and local code requirements all influence where exposure makes sense. This should be designed intentionally.
